Avanti is now selling 14:0 PE-DTPA(Cu) lipids. The addition of these lipids to their catalog was inspired by exciting research performed in our lab! This is outstanding vallidation that the research done in the Ramamoorthy lab is extremely important and relevant in both the NMR and biological fields. "Inclusion of copper (Cu²⁺) ions in bicelles in the form of a lipid chelate resulted in a 10-fold T₁ reduction and 2.7-fold increase in S/N of spectra for static experiments. This improvement would allow 2D experiments on membrane proteins in aligned lipid bilayers that typically take 3 days to be completed in <1.5 days. The technique is particularly beneficial to the study of membrane disrupting/permeating systems (such as antimicrobial peptides, toxins, amyloid peptides, and fusion peptides) whose concentration cannot be increased, as they result in nonlamellar conditions."

Please join us in congratulating Professor Ayyalusamy Ramamoorthy for being elected a fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  Prof. Ramamoorthy joins a growing list of University of Michigan Faculty who are fellows within this organization.

Nirbhay Jain received a Summer Undergraduate Research Program Award from the Chemistry department. Congratulations, Nirbhay!

Melissa Goldenberg received the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leadership Award from the Huron Valley Section of the American Chemical Society.

An important mission of the American Chemical Society is to promote an understanding of chemistry and its place in society.  The action and initiative of individuals are critical to this: to provide leadership, organization, and positive representation for science and citizenship.  Each year, the Huron Valley Section is pleased to recognize outstanding achievement in professional citizenship demonstrated by an undergraduate student.

Kevin Hartman successfully defended his thesis on December 14th. Congratulations, Dr. Hartman!

Melissa Gildenberg received the Novartis Undergraduate Research Fellowship and Austin McHenry received the James E. Harris Scholarship. They are looking forward to immersing themselves in research this summer! Congratulations to both of them!
